To enter Tibet, visitors need a Tibet Travel Permit that, as regulated by the Chinese government, has been applied for not personally but by a Chinese travel agency. Officials may request to view your Tibet Travel Permit at any time, such as at tourist attractions and bus stations.

Hotels in Tibet vary widely in terms of the quality of the facilities. Lhasa has many high-quality hotels as it is the most frequently visited city in Tibet. The Four Points by Sheraton in Lhasa features many of the same services as five star American hotels, such as airport pickup, a business center, medical services and 24-hour front desk and concierge service. However, as listed by China Highlights, many hotels in less-traveled areas outside of Lhasa are poor in quality and lack comforts such as hot water and heating. For example, a review posted to Trip Advisor describes the Qamdo Hotel, in Tibet's Qamdo County, as having old facilities and unreliable water.

Travelers visiting Tibet must consider not only their choice of hotel but also the very high altitude. Caution must be taken to avoid coming down with altitude sickness, such as avoiding strenuous exercise and taking plenty of time to rest when you first arrive. Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip protection are advised.
It is also important to abide by Tibetan social customs during your visit. Avoid discussing politics in any setting and ask permission prior to photographing statues and other individuals, and entering monasteries. It is necessary to dress appropriately and avoid smoking when visiting a monastery.
