Bible Story Paper Bag Crafts

Working with small children in a Sunday school or children's church setting can be a rewarding experience. Providing crafts to illustrate Bible stories helps children to identify with characters in the story. Children often process information better when they work with a hands-on project. Paper bags are an inexpensive, versatile material to work with, especially for a large group.

Joseph's Coat of Many Colors

  • Create your own coat of many colors like the one Joseph's father presented him in the book of Genesis. Turn a large paper bag upside down and cut through the middle of the front of the bag. Continue cutting through the top, cutting a circle for the neck in the top of the bag. Cut two large arm holes on the sides. Cut out large strips of brightly colored tissue paper or construction paper. Glue these strips on the front, sides and back of your "coat."

Baby Moses Basket

  • Make a basket for baby Moses with a small shoebox. Cut a large paper bag into 1 inch strips. Glue them on the outside of the box until covered. Older children can weave the strips, if desired. Glue two paper bag strips to either side of the box to create handles. You can either cut doll shapes out of construction paper for baby Moses, or children can use their own dolls from home.

Fishers of Men Game

  • Cut a paper bag in half and discard the top. Cut the top edge of the bag to look like ocean waves. Paint the bag blue. Cut several fish shapes out of construction paper. Glue a metal paper clip on each fish. Create a fishing pole by tying a string to a dowel rod. Attach a small magnet to the end of the string. Allow each child to hold the rod over the bag to catch a fish, explaining the story of Jesus calling men to serve as "Fishers of Men."

Bible Character Puppets

  • Small lunch-sized paper bags can be used to create any Bible character you wish to illustrate. Construction paper or pieces of scrap material glued onto the bags make good costumes. Yarn serves for hair and sashes. Props for the characters can be fashioned from construction paper or cardboard. Construct a puppet stage by draping a blanket across two chairs.
