Can I Turn Off Searchindexer.Exe?

SearchIndexer.exe is a Windows-based program that manages the indexing for the Windows Search feature, which in turn promotes faster and enhanced search results for Windows XP and Vista users. However, for those with older or low-performing computers, the disadvantages of using SearchIndexer.exe may greatly outweigh the benefits as the program uses up a considerable amount of CPU, making computers run at a slower speed. Fortunately, there are options to disable SearchIndexer.exe for both Windows XP and Vista users.

  1. Administrator Tools

    • For Windows XP, click "Start" in the left corner of your desktop screen, select "Control Panel," then "Administrator Tools" and choose "Services."

For Windows Vista, click "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Maintenance" and "Administrative Tools," then choose "Services."

    Stop Services

    • Select and click "Indexing Services" in the "Servics" menu for Windows XP. Press the "Stop" icon if the status is currently set to "Running."

Locate "Windows Search" for Windows Vista in the "Services" menu, right-click on it, then select "Properties."

    Disable

    • Locate "Startup Type" for Windows XP and Vista, then click on "Disable." Note that this will disable your indexing services permanently. Press "OK" to continue.

      .

    Restart

    • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Keep in mind that you can enable SearchIndexer.exe at any time.
