Fronterra Farmer Foundation

Small- and medium-sized, individually own farms that sell food products in Chicago area farmers markets are eligible to receive grants for capital improvements of up to $12,000 from the Frontera Farmer Foundation. To be eligible, you must have been in business for at least three years, and need to demonstrate how the funds will improve your farm and the availability of locally grown food in Chicago and its surrounding areas. The application deadline is Feb. 28, 2011.

The 1772 Foundation Funding for Agriculture and Sustainable Food Systems will fund projects in 2011. To apply, send a one-page letter of inquiry through the web portal linked to the foundation. Of particular interest are farmer training, farm to cafeteria programs, the development of food hubs, programs related to promoting agricultural education at historic sites and innovative approaches to urban agriculture. Also, if your project has anything to do with those rare and tasty heirloom breeds, the foundation is interested in it. Also of exceptional interest are youth farm education programs and urban agricultural programs, as well as projects that take a fresh approach to sustainable food systems.
