Non profits need to be creative to maintain their financial health.

The best way to fund a non profit organization is to organize events and ongoing activities that will simultaneously bring in funds and raise the public profile of the organization. Public awareness of the organization's name, accomplishments and goals makes the public more likely to be willing to contribute funds. Focus your non profit's fundraising efforts on specific groups that you know to be in agreement with your organization's goals.

  1. Money from Government

    • There are many government programs and grants aimed at supporting non profit and charitable organizations, funded by either local, federal or state governments. A non profit needs to be registered as a charitable organization in order to qualify for a grant from the government. Most grant proposals require a lot of experience in persuasive writing to be successful, and can take up a lot of time. Considering the amounts of money available, it is no surprise that the process of getting grant money can be extremely competitive. There are people who make their living solely from their expertise in grant proposal writing.

    Angels

    • An effective way of funding non profits that allows them to maintain a certain level of financial stability is to solicit ongoing pledges from long-term supporters, sometimes known as "angels." This method is often used by universities with their alumni, and it is capable of generating large amounts of cash over the long term. Large supporters are frequently very wealthy and agree with the goals of the non profit organization that they are supporting. These supporters may commit to writing a check for $1,000, $5,000 or more each year. The "angel" can claim the donation as a tax deduction, and the non profit can count on these large donations as a central pillar of its annual financial planning.

    Retail Operations

    • Non profit retail stores are a common sight in the UK, but they are not so widespread in North America. In the UK, shops such as Oxfam, the British Red Cross and Cancer Research UK are fixtures in most cities, selling donated books, household goods and clothing at low prices. They are raising funds for charitable activities and providing people with quality goods at a low price. Similar operations are run by the Humane Society, the Salvation Army and many local churches in North America. Charity shops also function as publicity, keeping the name of the charity in the public eye.

    Events

    • Special events of various types are frequently used by non profits and charities to raise money. These may include performances by local or famous musicians; walk-a-thons in which supporters solicit pledges from family, friends and neighbors; or silent auctions, where supporters of the non-profit bid on donated artworks, crafts or merchandise. Performances raise funds through soliciting voluntary donations or charging admission. Walk-a-thons raise funds through pledges of support for participants; they also provide a public opportunity for education about relevant issues. Silent auctions can be combined with performances as side events.
