The Saleen S281 was a high-performance option offered for the 2007 Ford Mustang by Saleen Automotive. It had a very limited production run and featured a race-tuned suspension, massive power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners and high-performance engine modifications that greatly improved handling, braking, and acceleration compared to the base Mustang.
The Saleen S281's engine was a 4.6-liter, three-valve, SOHC V-8. Bore was measured at 3.55-inches and stroke at 3.54-inches. It featured a Series VI, integrated twin-screw supercharger with a dual-stage water-to-air intercooler system. It used 39-pound fuel injectors, a 98mm MAF sensor, and PowerFlash performance calibration. Expelling the exhaust gasses was a 2.5-inch stainless steel center exhaust system. The engine was rated at 465 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 425 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm.
The S281 could be ordered with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission. It had an 8.8-inch rear end and came with a few differential options based on transmission choice. The manual transmission could come with either a 3.55-to-1 or 3.73-to-1 differential, with a MaxGrip speed-sensitive limited-slip option available for the 3.73-to-1. The automatic transmission came with a 3.31-to-1 ratio ring and pinion.
Suspension and Brakes
The Saleen S281 used linear-rate, coil-over springs in the front and rear, with struts in the front and shocks in the rear. It came with front and rear sway bars; the front used HD bushings and measured 1.38 inches, and the rear measured 0.79 inch. The brakes were power-assisted four-wheel discs with ABS. The slotted, vented front rotors measured 14 inches and used four-piston calipers. The vented rear rotors were 11.8 inches with single-piston calipers.
Dimensions and Capacities
The S281 had a length of 189.1 inches, a width of 74 inches, and a height of 56 inches. It's curb weight was 3,620 pounds with a weight distribution of 53 percent front and 47 percent to the rear. The wheelbase was 107.1 inches, with a front track of 62.8 inches and a rear track of 63.9 inches. Fuel capacity was 15.7 gallons. Trunk space measured 13.1 cubic feet.
The 2007 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 featured an original MSRP of $64,232. Overall, the the 2007 Saleen offered an increase in value compared to its 2006 predecessor. It included 30 extra horsepower, a race-craft suspension that planted the rear tires to the pavement, and a more comfortable ride ideal for daily driving.
