While there's no secret formula to get your items sold on Craiglist, a few strategies help keep your listings at the top when your buyers are most likely to see them. Craigslist handles free posts and paid ones differently, so follow the rules for your ad type when renewing your ads.
Craigslist allows you to renew a free ad every 48 hours. This bumps your listing to the top of the page every time you renew so it comes up higher in search results. To keep your ad as visible as possible, relist it as often as you can. This is a better option than trying to create duplicate ads, in which you have the same ad that you post at different times so you can renew them at different times; Craigslist doesn't allow duplicate ads, and the system likely will reject your second post. If both slip through, users might flag both ads for deletion, requiring you to start the posting from scratch. You can repost the same ad for 45 days, in most cases.
Paid ads work a little differently than free ads. Depending on the type of ad you're paying for, you might have seven or 30 days before you can renew. For example, posting paid therapeutic services is a seven-day listing, while paid job ads expire after 30 days. You can't renew or bump up your ad until your listing expires. Then, you must pay the fee again to bump it to the top. Relisting the ad might get you more traffic in the first few days, so renew it as soon as possible to get interest flowing back in.
Timing With Traffic
Instead of posting your ad when you have the item ready to sell, time the initial posting or a renewal with the times that ads seem to get the most traffic. Weekends are the busiest on Craigslist, especially Friday and Saturday, according to the All You website. Try to get your posts to the top of the lists during these times. For example, if you post on Wednesday, it's time for you to renew your listing on Friday and bump it higher for the increased weekend traffic. If you already posted on a Tuesday, don't hurry to renew it on Thursday; instead, wait until Friday afternoon to give it a bump.
Time of Day
Time of day can affect the success of your ad. Weekend mornings get more traffic than afternoons, except for Friday, when afternoon is the peak search time. Plan ahead for this by timing your original posting strategically. If you want to post on Wednesday, for example, wait until afternoon so you can renew Friday afternoon for peak traffic. If you do post early on Wednesday, hold off on the renewal until Friday afternoon rather than getting it in as soon as your 48 hours expires.
