Server Properties Cannot Be Viewed

To view Windows server properties, you must have permissions on the server to view the information. The error message returned when you try to view the properties without them is "Your selection cannot be displayed in the current view." The administrator changes the permissions, and the administrator on the computer always has full permissions to view the information. Large networks use these permissions to protect from unauthorized users viewing the server properties.

  1. Purpose

    • The purpose of properties permissions is to protect the network. Server properties display IP addresses, server name, services running on the server and other important information about the network. The information an unauthorized user can obtain from viewing the properties can lead to your network getting hacked, or the user can change settings on the server, which leaves the server open for hackers.

    Resolution

    • The only way to view the server properties is logging in to the server as an administrator or obtaining permissions from the administrator. The administrator gives you permission to the server properties in the "Active Directory Users and Computers" utility in the server Control Panel. Right-click the user and select "Permissions." Add the user to the "Administrator" group, and the error does not show after you save the changes.

    Security

    • Users are given access to the server properties by default. Administrators should remove access to these server properties. After the permissions are removed, the administrator logs in to the server using your username to test your user permissions. Removal of permissions is also accomplished in the Control Panel's "Active Directory Users and Computers" utility.

    Considerations

    • Server permissions should always be monitored. When a user logs in to the computer, an event is set up in the Windows Event Viewer utility. If any properties are changed, this action is also logged in the Event Viewer. Check the Event Viewer weekly or even daily to see that no unauthorized users are changing or viewing properties on your Windows server.
