RCA Cable Modem for Comcast Won't Pass DHCP

If you use an RCA cable modem to connect to Comcast Internet but experience problems starting or maintaining a connection, a problem may exist with the dynamic host configuration protocol, or "DHCP." Re-configure DHCP settings so you can resume connection your computer to the Internet via the router.

  1. DHCP and IP Address

    • In layman's terms, the function of DHCP is to retrieve an Internet protocol or "IP" address for your computer. If you have DHCP enabled for a particular modem or router, the computer is automatically assigned an IP address, a sequence of numbers which represents the computer's identity in terms of its geographical location and Internet service provider or "ISP." If you do not have DHCP enabled and have not entered your own IP address, you cannot connect to Comcast Internet via the RCA cable modem.

    TCP/IP Dialog Box

    • Windows includes a simple to use dialog box that lets you manage important aspects of Internet connections, including DHCP. This is known as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol or "TCP/IP" dialog box. To access this dialog box, navigate to the Control Panel and type "Adapter" into the "Search" feature. Hit the "Enter" key, and then right click the name of the RCA cable modem. Choose the "Advanced" tab to access the TCP/IP dialog box.

    Automatic IP Settings

    • Once you enable DHCP for the RCA cable modem, the computer is automatically assigned an IP address whenever you use the modem to connect to the Internet. To enable DHCP, tick the box next to "Use DHCP to Automatically Retrieve an IP Address" option. Click the "OK" button after making this specification to apply the setting; otherwise Windows doesn't save it.

    DNS

    • If you still experience problems connecting to the Comcast Internet via the RCA cable modem, the problem may relate to the connection's "Domain Name Server" or "DNS" gateway, another numeric sequence necessary for connecting to the Internet. You can set Windows to automatically assign a DNS gateway to the computer within the TCP/IP dialog box.
