Kaspersky bills itself as one of the strongest anti-virus software programs available, but if you can't download the automatic database updates from Kaspersky, you won't be able to protect your computer from threats like viruses and malicious software. This can be a downward spiral, since an outdated database makes your computer more vulnerable to attack from new viruses or malware, which can further prevent you from downloading new updates from Kaspersky. An expired subscription is one common cause, but also look into your Internet connection and potential software conflicts.
It may seem obvious, but if your computer isn't connected to the Internet, Kaspersky won't have the access it needs to download the latest updates from its online database. Make sure that your Internet router, modem or wireless card is correctly installed and powered up. Click on the icon of two computers on the bottom right of your screen. Your computer will tell you if you're currently connected to a network. If you aren't connected, click on the "Connect or disconnect" link at the bottom of the pop-up window. Choose a network to connect to and press the "Connect" button.
When you purchase Kaspersky, your computer is protected for a set period of time ranging from one to three years depending on your subscription. Once your subscription is expired, your computer will still be protected from all the viruses and malicious software programs previously downloaded by Kaspersky, but it will be blocked from downloading new updates until you renew your subscription.
Different programs and software running on your computer may interfere with Kaspersky's ability to automatically update its anti-virus database. For example, when you install Kaspersky on your computer, it automatically disables any Microsoft Windows firewalls already installed and uses its own. However, if the Windows firewall is accidentally enabled, it will conflict with the Kaspersky firewall and keep you from getting your updates. Other security programs like McAfee or Norton Anti-virus also conflict with Kaspersky and should be disabled or uninstalled from your computer.
Viruses and Malware
Of all the potential reasons you're unable to get your Kaspersky updates, viruses and malware are the most dangerous. Viruses and malicious software have the ability to hijack your computer system. In some cases, they may be merely inconvenient, producing pop-ups on your screen or redirecting you to third-party websites without your consent. In other cases, however, viruses and malware -- like Win 7, XP and Vista Anti-Virus 2011 -- can keep you from accessing the Internet or can even disable your existing security software. Download a third-party security scan like ComboFix or Malwarebytes and save it to your computer. Then, restart the computer and press "F8" until you see a boot menu, and select "Safe Mode." Run the security scan to identify, quarantine and remove the virus or malware from your system. Finally, restart your computer in standard mode and download your database updates from Kaspersky.
