NetGear WNDR3300 Problems With an Apple Mac

The NetGear WNDR3300 is one of NetGear's low-end dual band wireless routers. It offers wireless access on both the 2.4 gigahertz and five gigahertz ranges. The WNDR3300 is designed to be compatible with Apple operating systems. If you are experiencing problems connecting, the problem is most likely due to settings or environmental issues.

  1. Apple Settings

    • When an Apple computer connects to the Internet, it goes through your list of approved wireless networks until it finds one that is available. If you have many networks, it may take time for AirPort to find your WNDR3300 network. To speed up the process, make it the first option. In the Apple menu, choose "System Preferences" and click on the "Network" option. In the Airport tab, look for the WNDR3300 network name in the list of Preferred Networks. Click on the name and drag it to the top of the list so your Mac can connect quickly.

    Range

    • The WNDR3300 has an internal, omni-directional antenna, meaning that the signal is broadcast in all directions at once. Without an external, directional antenna, you lose some of the signal as it moves away from your computer. If you are using the router in the five gigahertz mode, the signal range will be even shorter. If you are not getting a signal on your Mac, watch the AirPort wireless indicator at the top right of your screen as you move closer to the router. If the signal gets stronger, range is probably responsible for connection issues. The router should be placed as close as possible to the computer for the best signal.

    Wireless Interference

    • Mac computers have built-in wireless networking capabilities with strong antennas. If your WNDR3300 is close to your Mac but you are getting a weak or intermittent signal, wireless interference may be to blame. Unassuming devices like microwaves, game controllers and sprinkler controls can put out radio frequencies that interfere with a Wi-Fi signal. Metal objects, like refrigerators or file cabinets, also cause the signal to degrade. For best performance, NetGear recommends that the WNDR3300 be positioned at least six feet from devices or material that cause problems with the signal.

    Network Diagnostics

    • Apple computers come with on-board Network Diagnostics that can help you identify and fix the problem with your WNDR3300. Choose "System Preferences" from the Apple menu, choose the "Network" option, click on "Assist me" and choose "Diagnostics." By following the on-screen prompts, Network Diagnostics will walk you through the process of restarting the router and help identify problems with log-in information.
