What Does a SIIG CN2468 Card Do?

PCI cards plug directly in to a computer's motherboard.

SIIG Incorporated produces a wide range of computer hardware components that you can use to add functionality to your computer. SIIG's no longer produced CN2468 model is a PCI -- or peripheral component interconnect -- card that you can use to connect hard drive devices to your computer or add control features for existing hard disks.

  1. ATA/IDE Controller

    • The SIIG CN2468 card plugs in to an expansion slot on your computer's motherboard. As suggested by its name, a PCI controller serves as an intermediary that allows your computer's memory to interface with attached storage devices. The CN2468 is an Ultra ATA 66 controller that includes two IDE ports, each of which can accept input and output from an IDE hard drive. The "66" in the title indicates that the device can transfer data from hard drive to system memory at speeds up to 66.6 megabytes per second.

    RAID Setup

    • PCI controllers such as the SIIG CN2468 were primarily designed to provide a connection interface between a hard drive and a computer. Although PCI cards are not used much for that purpose anymore, you can still add a PCI controller to implement a RAID system. RAID, which stands for "Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks," is a scheme by which hard drive contents are duplicated and indexed across multiple devices. Even if a motherboard has basic disk control capabilities, it may not include the protocol for supporting RAID backup. The CN2468 includes RAID interface controls, so adding the card to your motherboard and attaching multiple hard drives allows you to run a RAID system on your computer.

    Connectivity

    • A factory sealed CN2468 card includes standard 40 pin and 80 pin cables and a high speed Ultra ATA 66 cable that you can use to connect the device to your system. The device also includes a user's manual that describes basic installation and connection information. You must install required controller software in order to use a SIIG CN2468 PCI card with your Windows computer system. The package also includes a software diskette that contains the required drivers for controlling the device within the Windows architecture; these drivers are also available from free online sources such as www.driversoftware.com and www.driverguide.com.

    Availability

    • As of December, 2011 SIIG Incorporated does not list the CN2468 PCI controller card in its current product catalog located on the Web at www.siig.com/catalogsearch. Although SIIG still offers a few other add-on controller cards, the technology is largely obsolete since ATA controller capabilities are included directly in the chipset on new Intel and AMD computers. If you want to purchase a SIIG CN2468 PCI controller, you may be able to do so from secondhand hardware retailers.
