HijackThis Is Not Starting

HijackThis, a Windows-based diagnostic tool, analyzes your Web browser for potential vulnerabilities that can be used to exploit your computer. If malware has already compromised your system, it can potentially alter the application’s settings and prevent it from operating properly. Other reasons for HijackThis to malfunction or fail to launch relate to generic system problems. As a result, identifying the source of the issue involves one or multiple troubleshooting techniques.

  1. Malware Modification

    • Computer malware may prevent HijackThis (as well as other diagnostic and anti-spyware tools) from launching, particularly if your system is heavily infected. In rare cases, malware also prevents generic applets from opening in an attempt to halt manual clean-up efforts, such as performing registry modifications. Such issues are typically present until you successfully remove them, as malicious programs run in the background throughout the entire active Windows session.

    Damaged Executable

    • Certain spyware threats and viruses also target specific applications. As HijackThis is a prominent system utility, it may be corrupted by new or existing malware on your computer. The operating system essentially fails to access the utility's executable file, effectively causing it not to launch. Also, the application may have failed to install properly due to unspecified system glitches. Depending on the program’s integrity, it could present various error messages or simply not respond to user commands.

    Corrupted System

    • If your system has been severely compromised, the problem may no longer be directly related to HijackThis. Broken registry keys, whether related to the program or not, may fail to relay the necessary instructions and make it unable to launch as a result. This applies to HijackThis and other applications with altered registry entries. In such cases, the operating system is often considered unreliable and sometimes unpredictable.

    Purposes

    • Malware developers typically have one or various reasons to prevent HijackThis from starting. For example, you may receive a false error implying that your system is compromised, depending on the type of threat in question. Regardless of this notification’s validity, the error may suggest the use of a bogus anti-malware tool that could be commercially available or free of charge. If the program is freely distributed, hackers could use it to infiltrate your computer continuously, obtaining any personal data available.

    Solutions

    • Successfully fixing HijackThis or the operating system itself largely depends on your computer’s current conditions. Reinstall the application within your regular Windows session, as this may successfully correct the damaged executable file. Otherwise, launch Safe Mode by pressing the “F8” key during the boot sequence; this launches a simplified session that suppresses most infected system files from spreading. Attempt further cleanup procedures with other diagnostic and anti-malware tools, which could ultimately correct HijackThis or the system itself. If all else fails, you may need to repair or reinstall the operating system using its installation disc. Refer to the user’s manual for further instructions.
