Processing mapping software is designed to make planning and project management easier by providing users with access to customized digital flow charts, diagrams and analysis tools. Some process mapping software titles for Macintosh computers are Web-based, while others run off your Mac's hard drive.

  1. OmniGraffle

    • OmniGraffle is a diagramming and process mapping solution developed by Omni. Its features include a Graphiz-based layout engine, Bezier line creation, template customization, Microsoft Visio export capabilities and control over minute details including object size, stroke, location and fill. OmniGraffle requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later. It's available as 14-day trial, after which a standard license costs around $100, and a professional license around $200, as of the date of publication.

    Gliffy

    • Gliffy is an advanced suite of Web-based tools that can be used to design everything from process maps and flow charts to floor plans and Venn diagrams. Its features include online collaboration, customizable flow chart skins, selectable basic shapes, an image search tool, configurable user interfaces and site map creation. A standard subscription to Gliffy costs around $5 per user per month, which includes 200MB of online storage space and the ability to create up to 200 diagrams. The professional subscription costs around $10 per use per month and includes unlimited diagrams and unlimited storage space. A free version of Gliffy provides you with 2MB of online storage and up to five diagrams.

    Personal Brain

    • Personal Brain is a process- and thought-mapping tool that lets you save notes, Web pages, images and other files via drag and drop. You can then access and modify all of your files via desktop software or any Web browser connected to the Internet. What's unique about Personal Brain is that it automatically analyzes all of your files, noting shared keywords and other commonalities. It then lets you create a process or thought map based on these commonalities. Personal Brain is available for Macs running OS X 10.4 or later. In order to run Personal Brain, you need at least a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 100MB of free hard disk space.

    TeamFlow X

    • TeamFlow X is process mapping and management software for Mac OS X and Windows. It’s available in two different versions – Basic and Professional. Features of the Basic version include deployment flowchart creation, organization charts, undo and redo capabilities, spell check and the ability to export files to a variety of formats, including XML, PNG, JPG and GIF. The Professional version includes all of the features included in the Basic version, plus cost and scheduling systems, Gantt-style bar charts, online document attachment support and a template editor. The Basic version of TeamFlow X costs around $100, while the Professional version costs around $300.
