Two-Sided Printing on a Dell Laser Printer 1700N

The Dell Laser Printer 1700N doesn't support automatic two-sided printing and doesn't have a duplex attachment, which gives printers the ability to print on one side of the paper and automatically flip the sheet over to print on the second side. By selecting the proper settings in your print driver software and paying attention, you can print double-sided documents with the 1700N.

  1. Manual Duplex

    • To use manual duplex, you'll first need to select that option in your print dialog box. Once you do, you'll see message on your screen stating that the even-numbered pages in your document will print when you hit the "Print" button. When printing of the first side is completed, the boxes will prompt you to reload those pages into your printer, to print side two.

    Loading Paper

    • When loading paper into the 250- or 500-sheet drawer for duplex printing, the printed side should be facing up. The side of the paper facing down is where the ink will be printed for the second side. The manual feeder on the front of the printer only accepts one sheet of paper at a time, and Dell recommends "adjusting the paper guides to the print media’s width." Doing this step too quickly may cause a paper jam.

    Printing Side Two

    • When reloading a piece of printed paper into the manual feeder, the printed side should be facing down. Clicking the "Continue" button on your screen will start the printing of the odd-numbered pages on the back of the already printed even-numbered pages.

    Drawbacks

    • Drawbacks to this type of manual duplex printing do exist. If you load the paper incorrectly when preparing to print the second side, you will have to reprint the entire job. In addition, because the paper passes through the printer twice, your final product may have stray toner marks or wrinkles.
