Windows Live Messenger allows you to talk face to face.

Windows Live Messenger can be used to make video calls with a webcam. In order for the video call to work, both users need to have Messenger installed and they both need a Windows compatible HD webcam, microphone and high-speed Internet access. When the webcam is installed, the Messenger Audio and Video Wizard is used to configure the video camera's settings. When the wizard won't work, it could be that you are using incompatible software or your McAfee anti-virus is interfering with the program.

  1. Webcam Settings

    • When you find that your webcam will not send video or audio in Windows Live Messenger, it may be that the webcam's settings are wrong. MSN Messenger's default camera setting is for "MSI Live Virtual Camera." If you do not have a Microsoft LifeCam, this can cause the Audio and Video Wizard to not work when you set up your MSN Messenger. Go to "Tools" in Windows Live Messenger, and select "Audio and Video Wizard." Follow the prompts on the screen, and when the Audio and Video Wizard reaches the "Camera" selection page, click on the arrow to make the drop-down menu appear. Select "USB PC Camera" or "USB Video Device." Save your settings, and try to make a video call with your MSN Messenger account.

    McAfee SiteAdvisor

    • There has been a problem with the McAfee SiteAdvisor interfering with Windows Live Messenger 2009 version 14 Video Conferencing feature. If you have McAfee on your computer and have installed a previous version of McAfee SiteAdvisor, the program may cause the Audio and Video Wizard to not work. If you get the message "We are unable to run the Audio Video Setup" when running the Audio and Video Setup Wizard, it means that you have encountered an incompatibility problem that occurs between Windows Live Messenger 2009 and McAfee SiteAdvisor. Update your Windows Live Messenger to the 2011 version if you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista, and check for Windows updates. If, after you update your Windows and Windows Live Messenger, you get one of the following error messages such as "We couldn't start your camera device. Please check that your camera is not currently in use by another program, and then try again." or "Messenger is not available right now," it may be that you have an older version of McAfee SiteAdvisor that is interfering with your Messenger Live program.

    Update SiteAdvisor

    • Find the version of SiteAdvisor you have installed on your computer by opening your Web browser, clicking the arrow next to the SiteAdvisor icon in the Web browser's toolbar and then clicking "About." The first two digits of the version number indicate the version of SiteAdvisor you are running. If the first two numbers are 2.6, you have version 2.6. Manually update SiteAdvisor to version 2.9.256 or 2.8.306 by clicking the arrow on the SiteAdvisor icon and selecting "Get latest version." If this doesn't solve the problem, go to the start menu and type "Notepad" into the search text box, and press "Enter." When Notepad appears in the search results, right-click on it and select "Run as Administrator." Click "Continue." Click "File" and "Open." Select "C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\SiteAdvisor." When the folder opens, click on "sasets.ini" and then click "Open." Look for the section titled "[msnmsgr.exe]." Under that section will be "Enabled=1." Change it to "Enabled=0". Click on "File" and then "Save." Close the "sasets.ini." Restart your computer, the McAfee SiteAdvisor should no longer be interfering with your Windows Messenger Live video call.

    Virtual Webcam Drivers

    • In addition to changing the settings for to the correct webcam, ensure that the correct drivers have been installed. If you are using a virtual webcam driver, it may be that it is an incompatible program that can cause Messenger Live not to work. Uninstall the driver. Start Windows Live Messenger, select "Tools" then select "Set up Audio and Video Devices" to run the Tuning Wizard. Select the correct webcam from the list of cameras when prompted.
