What Is Ping in Google Wave?
Ping is a method for quickly communicating with Google Wave contacts without using bandwidth on additional features such as video or audio. Ping opens a two-way communications tunnel between you and the chosen contact, and the conversation between the two of you remains private. Once you learn how to use ping, you can speak privately with your contacts without having to start a new Wave.

Google Wave
-
Google Wave is a communication tool that combines features of instant messaging, email and social messaging. With Google Wave, you can have ongoing conversations with contacts in real-time, as well as upload and work on documents together. You can also create wiki-like pages within Google Wave that your contacts can access and edit in a coordinated effort. Like in Google Docs, you control who has access to the resources that you place into Google Wave.
A Normal Wave
-
Every time you create a new Wave with a contact, a file is created in a Google database. This file contains all information pertaining to the Wave, and will remain available to you through a server for the life of your use of Google Wave. This way, you can add to your Wave over time. If you click the "Start a New Wave" button on the right-hand side of the Wave interface, you will be provided with several Wave templates. Click on one and you will be presented with a word processor and several tools in the menu bar. When you have added your content, press "Enter" to submit it and then click contacts from the pop-up to invite them to your Wave.

Wave Features
-
While in a Wave, you can search Google, include maps, indicate a "yes" or "no" vote, or upload images, video, audio or other files using the "add attachment" feature. If you know the URL of a Google Gadget that you would like to add to the Wave, you can enter it by clicking the "Add Gadget by URL" button. With the Video Chat Experience gadget, you can have a video conference with up to six online participants.
Ping
-
If you just need to send a quick text message to an online contact, without any of the frills, you can ping them. To initiate a ping, click a contact's name, and then click the "Ping" button on the left-hand side of their name card. You can then send instant messages to one another through the chat window that appears. Ping can be useful if you are already in a video conversation with other contacts, and do not have the bandwidth to sustain another. You can ping multiple contacts and then minimize their chat windows just as you would with any instant messenger program.
