The SMTP Limits of Google Apps

Google Apps is a web-based tool that allows businesses, educational institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to send and receive emails, collaborate on projects, manage appointments, create documents, spreadsheets and presentations and add applications to enhance productivity and efficiency. Organizations primarily use it for email. Google Apps gives organizations a SMTP limit, which controls their sending limits. SMTP, also known as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is the protocol for transferring email messages across the Internet.

  1. Google Apps Domain

    • When you sign up for Google Apps, you have to provide a domain name. The domain name should be the one you use for your organization or company website. Google Apps allows you to use this domain name to create users within your account. Users receive email addresses that end with the domain name you provide. Users with email addresses based on your domain name, are considered internal users, while all others are considered external users.

    Daily Sending Limit

    • Google Apps allows users to send up to 2,000 emails per day. It doesn't matter whether you're sending to external or internal users; you cannot exceed 2,000 emails per day.

    Email Forwards

    • Google Apps allows users to forward emails from other email accounts to their Google Apps platforms. These automatically forwarded messages are not a part of Google Apps' daily sending limit. You can receive up to 10,000 auto-forwarded messages. You may have up to 20 account filters that automatically forward mail to your Google Apps account.

    Recipients Per Message

    • Google Apps limits the number of recipients you can include on a single email message you plan to send. The limit includes email addresses you type in the To, Cc and Bcc fields in a single email. You can include 2,000 recipients total, of which 500 can be external recipients. POP/IMAP users can send only to 100 recipients per message.

    Recipients Per Day

    • You can send to a total of 10,000 email recipients per day. Each email address you send to is counted once, each time you send to it in a given day. You can send emails to up to 3,000 external recipients per day. You can also send to only 3,000 unique recipients per day. For example, you can send five emails to one address, and this will count as one unique recipient. Only 2,000 of your unique recipients per day can be external recipients.
