Acrobat Crashes on Firefox

Adobe Acrobat was a reader for Portable Document Format graphics. Adobe rebranded the entire family of PDF software as Acrobat and renamed the reader Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader is available as a plug-in for Mozilla's Firefox open source browser. If you have trouble with Acrobat in Firefox and the browser crashes, devote some time updating your software. The underlying cause of the crash may have been fixed in subsequent releases of either Firefox or Adobe Reader.

  1. Firefox

    • The Firefox Web browser was born out of Mozilla and the opened source code of Netscape, one of the earliest browser success stories. Firefox branched from Mozilla and is now maintained by the Mozilla Foundation. Firefox has been under a rapid release cycle since early 2011, with versions 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 following each other in rapid succession. If you encounter any issues with Firefox, particularly crashes, download and install the latest version. Recent versions of Firefox are more stable.

    Portable Document Format

    • Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format with a product named Adobe Acrobat in the early 1990s. They later adopted the name "Acrobat" for the family of products used to create and read PDF documents. Portable Document Format is an open standard and many vendors support it. Originally, the PDF reader from Adobe was named Acrobat Reader, but it was rebranded as Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader can be installed as a plug-in to Firefox. If you're using a product that is still named Acrobat Reader, update it. To check your installation of Adobe Reader, open Adobe Reader, click the Help menu and then click "Check for Updates."

    Browser Plug-In

    • The browser plug-in that provided PDF support from Adobe was named Acrobat Reader and then rebranded as Adobe Reader. You must install the Adobe Reader package to get the Firefox Adobe Reader plug-in. This plug-in to Firefox is designed to load PDF pages within the browser window seamlessly. If you have the older version of the plug-in, Acrobat Reader, update it or download the full Firefox package and reinstall it. If updates to Reader don't fix the issue with crashes, investigate an alternative PDF reader plug-in for Firefox.

    Alternative Plug-Ins

    • Because PDF is an open standard, software tools are available to read PDFs in a variety of ways. One of the most common methods to access a PDF file is over the Web in a browser. If you've updated Firefox and Adobe Reader and you still experience crashes, the simplest solution may be to use a different PDF reader plug-in. Adobe has no plug-in for PDF files within Firefox on Mac OS X. If you have a Mac, find alternatives through the Mozilla Add-Ons directory. Options are also available for Firefox on Windows.
