My Mac Is Stuck on the Gray Screen
Numerous issues could be causing your Mac to be stuck on a gray screen, such as conflicts with peripheral devices or faulty internal software system settings. By following several troubleshooting steps in a particular order, you may be able to solve the problem on your own. If your efforts don't resolve the problem, you will need to have your Mac serviced by an authorized Apple service provider.
-
Disconnecting and Testing External Devices
-
If you have any external devices hooked up to your Mac, such as a printer, hard drive or FireWire or USB hub, remove them all and shut down your computer. One at a time, reconnect each device and try rebooting your Mac. If the computer starts after hooking up one device, continue reconnecting additional devices until the computer gets stuck on the gray screen again. You will need to be sure that you test the devices one at a time, so that you can determine which device is causing the Mac to stay stuck on the gray screen. If the Mac still won't move beyond the gray screen after this trial and error procedure, you can try performing a "safe boot" to see if that solves the problem.
Performing "Safe Boot"
-
Shut down your Mac, and if needed, hold the power button down until the computer turns off. Restart the Mac, then hold down the Shift key while it is restarting. This procedure is called performing a "safe boot," which performs numerous systems checks and repairs on the computer and disables all startup and log-in items. If the Mac starts up in safe mode, then immediately shut it down and try restarting. If the computer again gets stuck on the gray screen, you can try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, which are isolated sections of the RAM, which control such things as power settings and internal systems settings.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
-
To reset the PRAM and NVRAM on your Mac, shut down the computer, then restart and immediately hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys, making sure to press them before the gray screen appears. Continue holding these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound twice. Upon the sound of the second startup chime, release the keys. If your Mac still stays stuck on the gray screen after performing this procedure, you can try additional troubleshooing methods.
Using Disk Utility From Mac OS X Startup Disk
-
If you are still experiencing the gray screen problems after trying the items in Steps 1 through 3, you can try starting up from your Mac OS X installation disk and running the Disk Utility program from the menu at the top of the screen. To start up from the disk, insert the disk into your optical drive and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts. The Disk Utility program does specific repairs on the hard drive and may resolve the gray screen issue. In lieu of using Disk Utility from the startup disk, you can try using Alsoft's DiskWarrior, which is the industry standard disk utility program for Mac computers. If either of these disk repair programs don't resolve the problem after you have tried all of your other options, or if the computer won't start up from the disk, your best next option to resolve the problem is to contact an authorized Apple service center.
