Host an entertaining regifting party for all your friends.

When you receive unwanted gifts at Christmas or anytime throughout the year that you cannot return, hold on to those items and create a regifting party. The ideal time for a regifting party is after Christmas, because most people will have a gift or two they could spare to give away and exchange for a new one. Make sure guests do not bring a gift any other party guests gave them to avoid insults and embarrassment. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Invitations

    • Create funny invitations by using old birthday or Christmas cards as the invite. Cut a piece of white paper large enough to cover the wording in the card and write the party details on the piece of paper. Use duct tape or electrical tape to tape the paper over the wording in the card. Another idea is to print the invitations on cardstock and mail them to your party guests. Be sure to give your guests a minimum and maximum dollar value for the presents so everyone brings a gift of the same value.

    Decorations

    • Use recycled decorations for a regifting party. For example, gather a variety of birthday, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s party decorations that your friends do not need anymore and incorporate them throughout the party. Make signs or banners that read “Regift this” and “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to hang on the walls. Take birthday-, New Year’s- and Halloween-themed tablecloths and cut them into patches. Use duct tape to tape them back together to create a “regifted” tablecloth.

    Activities

    • Ask your party guests to sit in a circle and select one person to go first. That person must share a story about a crazy gift she received. Tell the guests not to share stories that involve any person at the party to avoid hurt feelings. Guests can also share stories about gifts they have previously regifted. Have a gift-wrap contest by awarding prizes for each person’s gift wrap. Award prizes for the prettiest, ugliest and craziest gift wraps.

    Games

    • For an easy exchange, number each gift as each guest brings it in the door. Place the gifts on a table and write the same numbers on small slips of paper. Each guest will draw a number and take the gift with the corresponding number. Alternatively, have the guests sit in a circle and place the gifts in the middle. The player who drew the number “1” can select her gift first. Each number after that will select a gift in corresponding order. Players can trade gifts with one person if they prefer.
