What Is Modem Bridging?

When your modem and router have a conflict, you cannot access the Internet or access your computer from a remote location. This conflict generally occurs when you add another product, such as a wireless router, to your existing configuration. Modem bridging can fix the conflict that exists between these devices enabling continued access to the Internet or access to your computer from a remote location.

  1. Bridge Mode

    • When you configure your modem in bridge mode, the network address translation, or NAT, is disabled. This allows your router to work as a dynamic host configuration protocol server without creating an internet protocol address conflict. Some Internet service providers require notification before you initiate the bridge mode setting on your modem. You can also configure bridge mode for wireless networking allowing at least two wireless access points to communicate. This allows you to create multiple local area networks using your router.

    Network Address Translation

    • NAT is responsible for rewriting the source and the destination address of the IP packets that go through your router. This offers you the ability to have more than one host on a private network. Additionally, you can access the Internet using one public IP address.

    Configuring Your Modem

    • In order to configure your modem for bridging, you need to configure your modem’s graphical user interface. To access your modem’s graphical user interface, you will need to connect your computer to the modem using an Ethernet cable. Open a web browser on your computer and enter the IP address for your modem. This number usually appears on the back or bottom of your modem. Enter your modem’s username and password to access the settings menu and activate modem bridging.

    Configuring Your Router

    • Configuring a router is a more complicated process, and you should take care not to input incorrect information into the various settings fields. Because every router manufacturer uses different parameters, there does not exist a universal standard for configuring your router. In most cases, if you properly configure your modem for bridging, you will not need to change any of the configuration settings for your router.
