What to Do With the Ancient Key in "Fable 3"

“Fable III” is the third installment in Lionhead Studios' “Fable” series of action role-playing games. Available for the Xbox 360 and Windows PC, this game focuses on your attempt to build a revolution and overthrow the tyrannical king of Albion. In addition to this main quest, the game features a number of side quests, including “An Ancient Key,” which is set in Brightwall Village.

  1. Prerequisites

    • You must complete the quest “A Special Delivery” in the Dweller Camp to receive access to “An Ancient Key.” “A Special Delivery” is a simple transportation quest. You receive a package from Saul's sister in the camp, which you must take to Saul, who is the librarian at the Brightwall Academy. Walk or teleport to the academy. You can find Saul to your left.

    An Ancient Key

    • You receive this quest from Saul after completing “A Special Delivery.” He will give you the key of forbidden knowledge. You must then lead him through the first hall full of books and down the stairs into the reliquary. You will frequently see hollow men, a type of undead monster. Take the stairs downward with Saul following behind you and enter the door at the very bottom. Fight a large group of hollow men; then move up the next set of stairs to unlock the secret room using the ancient key.

    Rewards

    • Completing “An Ancient Key” gives you access to a secret library in the reliquary. This library contains a rare book, “Famous Killers: Carl Tendency.” You also get access to the prism, which is a room located behind a golden door. You need a golden key to enter. The prism contains a series of cullis gates sealing off ledges. Each ledge contains a treasure chest and is guarded by hollow men. When you finish “An Ancient Key” you also have access to “An Evil Presence,” another quest given by Saul in Brightwall Village. This quest chain eventually yields a rare gem and five seals.

    Considerations

    • While “An Ancient Key” and other quests in this chain provide interesting information and some physical rewards, you don't need to complete them to finish the game. These quests occur outside the main plot of “Fable III” and will not help you with any other major missions.
