What Can I Wear for a Winter Formal as a Guy?

Guys should be just as conscious of their attire as girls for winter formals.

Guys may not think that they have to consider their clothing choices for dances or formals, but they should consider them carefully to ensure that they meet their school's formality requirement. Many schools ban sandals or flip flops, polo shirts and jeans from winter formals, so you should look for a suit or tux that can impress your date and uphold the standards set by your school. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tux

    • The tux is the standard formal outfit for guys, but not everyone has one sitting in their closets. Tuxes can be purchased or rented, but if you think that you will only wear one on very rare occasions, then renting is the way to go. A standard tux is comprised of a black jacket, black pants, white dress shirt and black tie or bow tie. However, tuxes come in a wide variety of colors ranging from blue to yellow, so your choices are not limited. Just keep in mind that the brighter the tux, the more attention you will draw.

    Suit

    • A suit is a bit more common than a tux, as some young men already own a suit once they reach their late teens or twenties. Suits, like tuxes, also come in a variety of colors, but suits can be mixed and matched. For instance, you can pair a tweed jacket with black slacks and look just fine, or you can combine a blue blazer with khaki slacks and still retain a formal air. Suits can also be solid, checkered or pin stripe, depending on your personal style.

    Socks and Shoes

    • Whether you wear a tux or suit, it is important to make sure that your socks and shoes match the ensemble. White athletic socks have no place at a winter formal, but you cannot go wrong with dress socks that match the color of your slacks. Also, avoid sandals and flip flops completely, as not only are they far too casual but they are likely too cold to wear in winter. Proper shoes include oxfords, loafers, cap toes, dress boots or monk straps.

    Acessories

    • To further enhance your style, you can add accessories to your ensemble. For instance, vests and cummerbunds aren't necessary, but they provide opportunities to add color and flair to a solid tux or suit. If you have a date and know the color of her dress, you can choose a vest or cummerbund to match her color, further identifying you two as a couple or as dates. Cuff links can add an air of respectability to your formal wear, and they also allow you to show off some individuality because you can have them engraved or designed based on your interests.
