Handprint reindeer headbands are a way to celebrate the holidays with a quintessential Christmas image.

Reindeer designs are emblematic of the Christmas season. The cold-climate animals bring to mind images of Santa Clause delivering presents on Christmas Day. To celebrate the holiday, you can create reindeer antler headbands as festive hair accessories for the whole family. A simple enough craft for children, adult versions can also be created using ready-made materials and embellishments for a customized appearance.

  1. Design

    • Reindeer antler headbands can be made using two basic designs. Headbands can be made from a 12- by 18-inch piece of paper or other suitable material, which is cut into a band two to three inches thick and 18 inches long. The band is fitted around the head and secured using tape or glue. The second option utilizes ready-made headbands with the antlers attached using glue.

The antlers themselves can be drawn by simply laying a splayed hand on the material being used for the antlers and tracing the entire hand above the wrist. This process is then repeated with the other hand.

    Materials

    • Reindeer antlers are the focal point of this craft. Choosing the proper materials for the antlers is important to create a durable headband. The antlers can be cut from a variety of materials, including construction paper, felt, posterboard and craft foam. For more durable versions, posterboard, craft foam and felt are the most practical options.

    Decorating the Antlers

    • While some reindeer antler headbands may be simple, relying on the shape and Christmas connotations of the antlers, others can be decorated for extra impact. Antlers can be embellished with craft materials such as glitter or sequins. In addition, antlers can be made more realistic with pencil shading. For a more musical, festive addition on sturdier materials, small jingle bells can be added to the tips.

    Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Headband

    • General reindeer designs can be used to create antler headband crafts. Alternatively, you can go with a more-specific reindeer image when creating your headband. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer can be used as a model for a headband craft. To create Rudolph, simply make the headband much as you would a basic reindeer antler design. Then, in the center of the antlers, glue a pair of plastic eyes and a red pom-pom for Rudolph’s signature nose and leave them to dry.
