Tips to Dress Like a Hipster
Hipster fashion is regarded as a mix of the grunge and punk fashion trends of the 1980s and 1990s. When these trends are compared, they look remarkably similar. Many youths have taken to making their own clothes from old clothes (as was the punk style of the 1970s and 1980s), and by doing that, bring about a new look. The best part about the hipster look is it's considered a unisex style in many ways. Does this Spark an idea?

Pants

Wear tight jeans. Both the men and the women of the hipster subculture have taken to wearing tight jeans. Levi's (levi.com) has even taken to selling extra tight "Ex-Girlfriend" jeans for men.
The grunge trend evident in hipster fashion has also emerged in their jeans: bleach and paint-spattered jeans are very much in fashion, as are ripped jeans. Cut off jean shorts are also popular amongst hipsters; slacks worn as shorts by hipsters are usually cut off as well.
Shirts

Wear tight, dark-colored band t-shirts or shirts featuring ironic, anti-establishment slogans. If you're wearing a hoodie, select a size smaller than the size that properly fits you; this goes for the t-shirts as well.
Female hipsters are known for donning the same shirts as males, but also wear more traditional -- though still darkly-colored -- female tops such as spaghetti straps and boldly-patterned blouses.

Clad your feet with skate sneakers or loafers like Vans (vans.com) or Adidas (adidas.com). Males can wear large Dr. Marten's (drmartens.com) boots that are consistent with 1980s punk styles while hippie-styled loafers made of hemp also fit into the hipster look. As with the shirts and pants, dark colors are favored more among hipsters.
Female hipsters have more freedom with their shoe choices. Girls can wear heels or flats with their skirts or dresses, or just don Converse All-Stars (converse.com). Long leather boots are also very hipster-chic.

Hipster women have the upper hand when comes to making their own styles; hipster men tend to employ the t-shirt and jeans look more often than not. Females can wear dresses and skirts instead of the frumpy look normally associated with hipster males. Dresses, skirts and tops with black lace are very popular among hipster girls. Extra large sweatshirts can be donned over cut off jean short-shorts while dark colored fishnet stockings cover the legs.
Accessories

Wear large, reflective sunglasses. Aviator sunglasses are timeless and still worn, even at night, among hipsters.
Males tend to accessorize much less than females, and this is also evident in the hipster subculture. Females can wear oversize hats, large bows, headbands or even fake flowers in their hair along with large clunky, plastic bracelets and rings. The handbags carried by female hipsters should be over-sized and match the color scheme of the clothing.
Remember to keep the accessories dark and/or boldly-patterned. Polka dots, flannel or houndstooth accessories will fit well with the hipster style.
