There is a lot at stake in the birthday gift you buy for your girlfriend. Something too practical can signal that you don't care about her. Something too intimate can make you come on too strong, especially in a new relationship. Finding the balance between the two extremes is a challenge, but it is made easier with a few simple gift ideas. As a general rule, avoid household appliances or gifts that only you will enjoy. Instead, think carefully about what has meaning for your girlfriend and get a gift that shows her how you feel about her.
Boyfriends often buy birthday gifts that a girlfriend can hold onto as a reminder of the relationship. Jewelry is common in this regard. Necklaces, bracelets and earrings make wonderful gifts. It is best to ask one of your girlfriend's friends for advice on what kind of jewelry she likes best. A framed photo of the couple together also makes a meaningful gift. A girl can keep the photo somewhere close to her, such as her bedroom, and look at it whenever she and her boyfriend are apart.
Conventional romantic gifts are a common choice for a girlfriend's birthday, especially if you don't know what else to get her. A large bouquet of flowers sent to your girlfriend's house is usually a can't-miss gift that shows you care. Chocolates are also a standard romantic birthday gift. Go all out and get expensive chocolates. Another idea is to find out what perfume your girlfriend likes and buy it for her.
While romantic gifts show you care, some girls like to get a birthday present that they can use, as long as there is thought behind it. A boyfriend can buy clothing for his girlfriend's birthday, especially if there is an article she has been hinting at. As with jewelry, it is best to ask one of your girlfriend's friends to go shopping with you. When in doubt, buy a size that is too small rather than one that is too large. Electronics also make a good birthday present, but only if you know it is something that your girlfriend really wants. Don't buy her a video game system simply because you think she might enjoy it.
A birthday is also an occasion to plan a fun date or weekend with your girlfriend. Most girlfriends will appreciate a romantic getaway. If you are in a serious relationship, organize a weekend away at a bed and breakfast or a resort. For a shorter alternative, make a couple's spa date or reserve one night at a fancy hotel. If you are looking for something a little cheaper, a reservation at a nice restaurant can turn any birthday into a fancy occasion.
