Fun family projects can take place in the frontyard or backyard.

Some families have a bucket list, which is a list of fun things to do or accomplish. Family bucket lists provide families with fun activities and projects to do on a rainy day or over summer vacation. Family activities promote unity and bonding, provide entertainment and encourage children to build their skills and talents.

  1. Planting

    • Plant a garden. Teach children how to till, plant seeds and care for a vegetable or flower garden in the backyard. A garden is an ongoing project, since it requires maintenance and tending. Another fun project to do outdoors is to plant a tree. Invite children to help plant a seedling in the yard. Measure the tree at the time of planting and record its growth every few months.

    Time Capsule

    • Build a family time capsule. Have each person in the family contribute one item to the capsule. Encourage children to contribute an item that is time-sensitive, such as a newspaper or a family photograph. Write a short description of the contents, explaining the significance of each item. Place the items in a sustainable container and bury in the backyard or hide in the attic.

    Backyard Olympics

    • Host Olympic games in the backyard. Organize different races, such as an egg and spoon race, a three-legged race, a wheel barrel race and a baton race. Arrange space for a discus throw or a long jump. Divide the family into teams. Have individuals compete in races for individual medals and for a team medal, awarded to the team with the most victories. Invite neighbors and friends to participate or to watch the races.

    Talent Show

    • Organize a family talent show. Have each member of the family prepare a routine or performance based on his or her special abilities. For instance, have family members sing, dance, give a comedian routine or perform magic tricks. Include family pets, if any perform special tricks. Invite neighbors, friends or extended family members to attend the family talent show.
