Why Can I Not Open File Extension MHT?
An MHT file extension indicates an MHTML file, a saved version of a complete Web page. If your computer doesn't know to open this file in an appropriate Web browser, you won't be able to view the file. Not all Web browsers can open MHTML files, so assigning the file type to the right program will allow you to open the file.

MHTML
-
Starting with Internet Explorer version 5, Microsoft added the ability to save complete Web pages in a single file on your computer. The file uses Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension Hypertext Markup Language, known as MIME HTML or MHTML. This format saves a complete Web page, including all images, text, hyperlinks and the code that specifies how the Web page looks. Most programs on your computer can't handle all of these different types of information, so they can't open an MHT file.
Compatible Programs
-
The MHT format is designed to work with Internet Explorer. If you no longer have this Web browser on your computer, you may need to reinstall it to view your MHT files. Firefox and Safari Web browsers also will open MHT files, but only if you install add-on software. Opera Web browser version 9 and later will open MHT files without additional software.

Assigning a Program
-
Once you have an appropriate browser installed on your computer, you need to assign files with the MHT extension to open in that program. Right-click an MHT file on your computer and choose "Open With" from the menu. If a compatible program appears in the selection box, click it. If not, choose "Browse" and locate Internet Explorer or another compatible program on your computer. Select the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and click "OK." The file will open in the correct program, as will any future MHT files you open.
Cautions
-
MHT files can expose your computer to infection due to a weakness in the code that is exploited by malicious websites. Microsoft recommends setting your computer to automatically install important updates, which include security updates to address this issue. Microsoft published a bulletin regarding a security update for this issue on April 12, 2011. If you have installed updates since that time, your MHT files should be safe. If someone else sends you an MHT file, use your security software to scan the attachment before opening it in any program.
