A long-distance relationship is always challenging, but sending your boyfriend off to a new country with a heartfelt gift ensures he’ll leave thinking of you. If your gift is small and easy to slip into his carry-on bag, present it to him when you say your good-byes. If it’s larger, present a few days before he leaves so he has plenty of time to pack it up.
Gifts for His New City
Put together a basket full of essentials for his new city. Research the restaurants and attractions in the city and make him a list of the places you think he’ll like. Buy a gift certificate to one of the restaurants if possible and tuck it into the basket. Include guidebooks about the city and other cities nearby. The country he’s moving to will likely have different outlets than he’s used to, so include some adapter plugs so he’ll be able to charge his favorite devices.
Send him along with mementos of your relationship and his relationship with his friends so he’ll always be able to remember the important people he left. Print copies of photos of you together and arrange them in a photo album, or turn them into a scrapbook along with other mementos you’ve saved like movie tickets or love notes. Ask his friends to contribute photos of their favorite memories with him as well. Set up a video camera and interview his friends about their favorite memories of him. Tuck a copy of the film into the photo album or scrapbook.
Keeping in touch over the phone may be made difficult by expensive international call fees, so you’ll need to plan some other ways to keep in touch. Encourage him to communicate the old-fashioned way by writing letters, since hand-written notes are far more romantic than email. Give him a package of stationary. Visit the local bank to exchange some money for his new currency. Give him this money with a note explaining he should use it for stamps.
While he’ll be missing you when he’s gone, he’ll also likely be missing all his other favorite things from home. Fill a box with his favorite types of candies and snacks. Avoid anything soft or perishable, since it can go bad before he makes the move. Buy a jar of barbecue sauce from his favorite restaurant, bags of hard candies he loves or a T-shirt from his favorite bar so he’ll always have something to remember it by.
