A metal and glass divider can also be covered in material -- an entirely new look for your space.

If you're living in a small space, a curtain separation can give dimensions to your room. Even if you're living in a larger space, such as an open concept condo, perhaps you want curtains for room separation. You can use fabric of all kinds to give your room the appearance of separate areas; these dividers can also add to the overall style and theme of your home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Leather

    • Leather curtains are one option for a room divider. Leather is a heavy, expensive fabric (unless you can creatively repurpose your leather) and should be used only if you have a room where the divider will typically stay closed. Moving the divider frequently may be challenging, and you may scratch an expense piece of leather. (You can also look for leather-looking vinyl as another option.) Using dark leather is ideal if you want to block out natural light for sleeping.

    Cotton

    • Another option for a room divider is cotton. The benefit of cotton is that it comes in a variety of colors and styles, is inexpensive and also can be moved easily. Cotton, however, unless it is a very dark and heavy fabric, will not block out natural light for sleeping purposes. Cotton dividers may not also last as long, but this also means you can switch up the look of your space often.

    Hardware

    • The type of fabric you use is just one consideration; you also need to determine the type of mount you'll use for your divider. You can use stainless steel, silver plate or brass metal hardware to create a frame for your divider, or you can hang your divider from the ceiling. Try to match the hardware to the style of your space; steel and silver works best for contemporary rooms while brass and wood work well for more traditional taste.

    Padding

    • If you want your room divider to cushion noise and do more than create the illusion of rooms and separate living areas, choose a padded divider. You can make a divider similar to cubicle walls by covering wood with foam and then covering it in material. The thicker the wood and padding, the more noise efficient your divider will be. Although you will not eliminate all noise, you will eliminate some noise.
