The WiFi Toggle on My Android Is Always On

When Android cellphones operate for days, weeks or even months without an occasional power down, strange behaviors can manifest. One such symptom is the inability to operate home screen toggle widgets. As a result, the toggle for your Wi-Fi feature may have become stuck in the "ON" position if the feature was active when the problem occurred. Barring hardware issues, the toggle switches can be repaired by performing a few troubleshooting operations.

  1. Restarting Your Android

    • Press the "Power" key, and hold it until a menu appears. Choose "Power Off" from the list of options. Once your Android phone has shut down, wait at least 30 seconds before powering it up again. This may resolve minor software bugs that caused the toggle switch issue. Test the toggle, and if the issue is resolved, remember to switch your phone off now and then as a form of preventive maintenance.

    The Toggle Switch

    • If the Wi-Fi toggle refuses to budge, you may need to delete and reinstall it. Tap and hold the toggle until it grows larger, then drag it over the trash can icon at the bottom of the screen. Remove your finger from the screen to complete the deletion. Tap and hold an empty section of the screen until a menu appears. Select "Widgets," and then choose "Wi-Fi Toggle." Tap the new toggle switch to see if the Wi-Fi feature deactivates. If it doesn't, more intensive measures are required.

    Wiping Your Android

    • If the Android operating system has somehow been corrupted -- such as by malware or errant applications -- then a master reset will be necessary to restore the device's normal functionality. Pressing the "Menu" key and selecting "Settings" will allow you to open the "SD & Phone Storage" menu. From there, choose the "Factory Data Reset" option, and then tap "Reset Phone." Press "Erase Everything," and wait for the Android device to power itself off and back on. Test the toggle switch once more to confirm the resolution of the issue.

    Replacing the Device

    • If the Wi-Fi toggle will not deactivate, internal hardware issues may necessitate exchanging the device under warranty. If your warranty has expired, you may need to purchase a replacement phone. Contact your service provider to review your options.
