Wording Suggestions for Newspaper Wedding Announcements

Wedding announcements traditionally are placed in the newspaper where the couple lives, as well as the papers where they grew up. These wedding announcements are placed in the paper after the wedding and often contain details about the ceremony, as well as information about the couple. While there are general guidelines about what to place in your wedding announcement, you should also talk to someone at the newspaper to find out if it has its own guidelines.

  1. Biographical Information

    • Include biographical information about the bride and groom. For example, include both of their full names, where they are from, where they went to college and their occupations. It is also customary to list the couple's family members, including their parents, stepparents, grandparents and siblings. Include both the names and residence information about the family members. For example, begin by saying something like "Jane Mary Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, recently married John Thomas James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben James."

    Wedding Information

    • Place information about the wedding in the announcement as well. Detail the date, time and location of the wedding. Include information about what the bride wore, what flowers she carried and what the groom wore. Add information about what the guests were served at the reception and what the wedding cake looked like. A typical sentence might read something like "The evening wedding took place just as the sun went down, with the pink sunset mirroring the bride's rose bouquet." Descriptions make the readers feel as though they were there.

    Wedding Party

    • Place information about the wedding party in the announcement. List the names and cities of residence of the bridesmaids, maid of honor, best man, the groomsmen and ushers. Include the names of any junior bridesmaids and groomsmen, flower girls and ring bearers. Explain the relationship between the person and the bride or groom as well. For example, say something like "Sarah Elise Thomas of New Orleans served as the bride's maid of honor. The two met in college at the University of Alabama." Continue with the rest of the bridal party.

    Post-Wedding Information

    • Include information in the wedding announcement about the couple's honeymoon plans, whether they went on the honeymoon just after the wedding or are planning a trip for the future. Add where the couple plans to live together as well. If the bride and groom have already concluded their honeymoon, say something like: "The happy couple recently returned from their honeymoon at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico."
