Crafts about David the shepherd boy help reinforce Bible stories.

Long before he became King of Israel, David was a shepherd who played the lyre as he lovingly watched over his father's flocks of sheep. While he sat in the fields, tending the sheep, he composed songs of praise to God. Some of his works, which are known as the psalms, depict God as a shepherd of His people. Making craft projects that pertain to sheep and shepherding is a fun yet educational way for children to learn about young David.

  1. Shepherding Diorama

    • Explain to the students how shepherds cared for their sheep during David's time. Have students create a diorama of David and his sheep that illustrates a typical shepherd and flock of sheep in Biblical times. Have the students explain why they arranged their dioramas the way they did.

    Sheep Pillow

    • Making their own toy sheep can be a creative craft for children as they learn stories about David. Give each of the students a small, oval pillow. Help them glue cotton balls all over the pillow, for the sheep's wool, and black felt pieces for the sheep's legs and face. Instead of cotton balls, you can use pieces of cotton batting.

    Edible Sheep

    • Make a batch of peanut butter fudge (or vanilla, if any of the children have peanut allergies) ahead of time. Cut the fudge into squares then roll the squares into balls for the sheep's bodies. In class, help the children roll a ball of fudge in coconut flakes to create the sheep's wool. They can add a chocolate chip for the face. Each student can take home their edible sheep.

    Sheep Magnet

    • Cut black craft foam into the shape of lambs' bodies without wool. There should be one for each student. Glue a small, round magnet on the back of each sheep body. Have the children glue cotton balls on the front of the foam to make the sheep's wool. Add any additional decorations for the ears, eyes, etc., as desired. Once the glue dries, the magnets will be ready to use.
