Braided Ribbon Barrettes Crafts
Barrettes are hair accessories that never really go out of style. Effective at holding hair back from a girl or woman's face, barrettes come in a variety of colors and styles. To help make plain barrettes special, decorate them with ribbons in different types of braids and knots. This easy method of decoration can make even the simplest barrette into something special.

Standard Braid
-
One simple way to add color to barrettes is to choose several different colors of ribbon and braid them together using the standard three-strand braiding method. Use many strands of each color in each chunk of the braid to make the braid thick, or use thick ribbons when braiding. Knot both ends of the braids and cut the ends. Run a strip of glue over the barrette and lay the finished braid on top. Put pressure on the braid until the glue dries.
The Braided Barrette
-
Some barrettes have two metal pieces on the top with a space between them. For these types of barrettes, it is easy to braid two strands of ribbon or string around the metal pieces. To braid around a barrette, place two strands of different colored ribbon over each other and thread the two ribbons through one end of the barrette. Braid the ribbon over one side and through the middle, and do the same to the other half of the ribbon. Continue until the ribbon has been threaded all the way through the metal barrette.

Braided Barrettes with Beads
-
To make braided barrettes even more special, tie beads at the ends of the ribbons when the braid is done. Using the extra string or ribbon to tie on beads gives the barrettes extra decoration and personality.
Other Decoration Ideas
-
Once a braided barrette is completed, another option for decoration is to use puffy paints to decorate, or to use glue to add sequins, glitter or whatever else would make the braided barrette personal and fun.
