Deciding which style of windsurfing board is right for you is the most important step in buying one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Life Vests
  • Wet Suits
  • Windsurf Boards
  • Windsurf Rigs
  1. Step 1

Take a windsurfing lesson, if you haven't already, to be sure you want to invest your money in all the gear needed to windsurf.

  2. Step 2

Ask your instructor a lot of questions about where to buy gear (including used gear) and what gear you will need.

  3. Step 3

Decide which type of windsurfing you'll be doing. Most beginners should start with a standard flat board, but note that there are also course boards (for racing courses), slalom boards, wave boards and speed boards.

  4. Step 4

Determine whether you want a lot of rocker or a little. The rocker is the curvature of the board from the nose to the tail. A board with less of a rocker tends to ride faster, while one with more turns more easily.

  5. Step 5

Decide whether you prefer a hard sail or a soft sail. The hard sail offers better power and speed, but the soft sail is easier to control. There are also sails that incorporate features of both.

  6. Step 6

Visit a windsurfing specialty store, preferably one that offers rentals and lessons as well. Explain to them what you are looking for, your intentions and your price range. Most shops offer package deals that include everything you need to get started. This is generally the best way to purchase your first board to avoid the confusion of mismatched parts.

  7. Step 7

Make sure to get all the accessories you need as well: life jacket, foot straps, and the proper fin for the board. Ask the salesperson at the store about the things you'll need.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your receipts and ask about return policies in case you discover something is broken or decide on something else later.
  • Flat boards and course boards are usually the best boards for beginners - they're the most stable and are easier to sail in light winds than other styles.
  • Take a lesson before you try to windsurf on your own. It can be very difficult and frustrating in the beginning.
  • Always wear a life vest when windsurfing.
  • Learn to windsurf only in mild conditions.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
