Configure your Thunderbird email client to use Sendmail.

Email messages can pass through multiple hosts as they move from sender to recipient. Sendmail is a software application that originates, receives and relays email messages. It has been ported to all major operating systems. You can use Sendmail to receive outgoing email messages from a local email client such as Mozilla Thunderbird and then route them to the appropriate remote servers. Sendmail is configured to accept email messages from Thunderbird by default. You can configure Thunderbird to communicate with the Sendmail program running on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Thunderbird by double-clicking on its desktop icon. Click on "File," "New" and then "Mail Account." The account setup wizard opens.

    • 2

Input your full name into the "Your Name" field. Enter the email address and server password for the account being added to Thunderbird into the "Email Address" and "Password" fields. Click "Continue." Thunderbird will attempt to fill in the remaining configuration parameters by looking up your email domain on a table of known providers.

    • 3

Compare the settings found by Thunderbird for your email account with the correct values from your email provider. If Thunderbird detected the settings automatically, click "Re-test Configuration." Click "Create Account" once Thunderbird establishes a successful test connection to the email server.

    • 4

Input the necessary parameters manually if Thunderbird was unable to obtain your server settings or if the settings are wrong. On the "Incoming" line, choose whether to connect to the email server for that account using the Post Office Protocol (POP) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). Type the port number on which your POP server listens for connections into the third field from the left of the "Incoming" line. Select the authentication protocol from the adjacent pull-down menu.

    • 5

Configure Thunderbird to send emails out through Sendmail by entering "localhost" in the "Outgoing:" field. Enter port number "25" into the next space. Click "Create Account" to have Thunderbird finalize the configuration of the email account that now works in conjunction with Sendmail.
