How to Upload Music to Spotify

Spotify is a music streaming and download service that features not only music by major labels, but also music by independent artists. Having your music available on Spotify will introduce more listeners to it, as well as earn you royalties every time one of your songs is played. Although it is not possible to upload music directly to Spotify, signing up with one of several artist aggregators that Spotify works with will ensure your music is available on the service.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact one of the artist aggregators that work with Spotify. Three of the aggregators that Spotify works with are CDBaby, Tunecore and Ditto Music. See the link in Resources for a a complete list.

Compare the fees and features of each artist aggregator to choose the one that is best for your needs, both present and future. For example, CDBaby offers a wide variety of additional services, such as CD distribution in both online and brick-and-mortar stores and a credit card swiper that will allow you to sell your music at live events. Tunecore offers the possibility of having your CD printed on-demand and sold on Amazon. Ditto Music only deals with online sales, with no added features.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have uploaded your music to an artist aggregator, it may take up to four or six weeks for your music to be available on Spotify.

  • Although you can use the Spotify player to play music located on your computer, doing so will not upload it to Spotify. Any music you play from your computer will only be available to you.
