Your MacBook Pro not only needs the latest software updates to work optimally, but the latest device drivers as well. These software files allow OS X to communicate with your computer hardware. Think of them as a set of directions that "drives" your hardware along. The drivers for Nvidia 8600M GT and other MacBook Pro video card models are especially important for the best performance in games and graphics programs. Although using outdated drivers won't cause problems in most situations, you should update to the latest video card drivers for better compatibility.
Click the Apple button in the upper left corner of your MacBook Pro screen. Select "Software Update..." from the menu that appears. Your Mac will check for available updates, including video card drivers.
Select "Show Details" in the window that appears to see a list of updates. If there is a driver update available for your Nvidia 8600M GT video card, you will see it on the list. All available updates are checked off for installation by default, but you can uncheck any you don't want to install.
Press "Install Items" at the bottom of the window. Mac OS X will install the updates you selected, including new video card drivers. Your MacBook Pro may prompt you to enter a password, and you may need to restart your system after installation.
