B&M Megashifter Installation Instructions

The B&M Megashifter is one of the most iconic muscle car shifters you can install in your car. Fortunately, the Megashifter is not a part that can only be installed on a muscle car. It can, in fact, be installed onto any three- or four-speed vehicle with an existing floor-mounted shifter. Before you begin the installation of your B&M Megashifter, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts you need for your specific vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch drive socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Read through the instructions included with the B&M Megashifter pertaining to your specific vehicle. Some vehicles require special connections to the transmission itself, while the B&M shifter allows other vehicles to utilize their stock shift linkages.

  • Remove the stock shifter boot from the vehicle, if it is equipped with one, by removing the trim ring or by pulling it out of its housing. When this is completed, reach around behind the shift knob and locate the pin that secures the knob to the shift lever. Pull out this pin by prying it up with a screwdriver, pull the shift knob off of the shift lever and set it aside.

  • Unbolt the stock shifter unit from the floor of the vehicle using the socket wrench. For most automatic transmissions, this can be done in one piece, since the shift unit controls the transmission with cables. When the shifter is unbolted, set it aside with the cables still attached.

  • Put together the B&M Megashifter according to the directions included with the package. Pay particular attention to the suggestions for where to trim the shifter housing according to the needs of your vehicle.

  • Disconnect the transmission linkage from the old shifter as well as the shift indicator light, if so equipped, and then connect them to the B&M shifter unit. When this is done, bolt the shift unit to the floor of the vehicle in place of the stock shifter unit. If you have to use replacement shift linkages, install them now.

  • Run the vehicle through its gears to make sure that each one engages correctly, and that the lockout functions as it is supposed to. The lockout is the small trigger located just in front of the shift lever. This prevents the transmission from accidentally being thrown into the wrong gear. When the lockout is in place, for instance, you will not be able to push the lever into neutral without pulling the trigger.

Tips & Warnings

  • Every vehicle on which the B&M Megashifter can be installed requires a slightly different installation process, all of which are covered in the Megashifter installation manual. Read it carefully to avoid damage to your vehicle's drivetrain.
