How to Shut Down CentOS 5

Save

CentOS is a community-driven Enterprise Linux distribution. It is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Unlike RHEL, which is available through a paid subscription, CentOS is free. You can install CentOS with a graphical desktop or as a server, with no desktop environment. There is a graphical method and command line method for shutting down the system. You must have root, or administrator, privileges to shut down the computer from the command line. You can schedule the shutdown for a specific time using the command line option.

Graphical Desktop Environment

  • Click on the "System" menu in the desktop panel.

  • Click on the "Shut Down" menu.

  • Click on the "Shut Down" option in the menu that appears.

Command Line

  • Open a terminal window or log in via an SSH session.

  • Type the command "su -" to switch to the root user.

  • Type the command "/sbin/shutdown -h now" to completely shut down the machine. You can replace "now" with a time such as 2:00 to shut down the machine at 2 a.m. or +5 to shut down the machine in five minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Commands should be typed without the quote marks.
