Check your water iron level by using a water strip, available at stores nationwide. Hold the strip into the water and test the levels of iron. Water high in iron will cause blonde hair to have a reddish brassy tone. Install an iron filter to the shower nozzle, or a water softener, to remove the excess iron in your water.

Wash your hair with a blue or purple shampoo to neutralize the brassy color. The blue or purple undertones will help to remove the brassy color; however, the amount of washes will vary, from once or twice or more, depending on the amount of brassiness in the blonde. Apply the blue or purple shampoo to the location of the brassy color, such as the tips or roots. Both shampoos are available at drug stores and beauty supply stores.

Purchase a toner from the drug store and apply it to the hair. Toner is a semi-permanent hair color that has a blue or violet base for blondes. Apply the toner just like hair dye and leave it on for the recommended time. Rinse the hair clean with lukewarm to cool water to remove the brassy color.
