How to See If You Are Blocked on Gmail Without Pidgin

Save

One of the advantages of using Pidgin, a desktop chat client you use with Gmail Chat and other web-based chat applications, is that the programs tells you whether one of your contacts has blocked you. If you can't install Pidgin on your computer or simply don't care to, investigate whether you're blocked within Gmail Chat itself.

  • Open Gmail and sign in to your Google Account if you're not logged in. Wait for the Gmail Chat window to load along the left side of the page.

  • Scroll through your list of contacts until you find the person you believe blocked you. If she shows as "Online," "Away" or "Busy," she has not blocked you.

  • Hover your mouse over the user's name if it appears offline and click "Chat." Type a message in and hit "Enter." If you receive no response, automated or otherwise, the user is invisible. If you receive a message that he's offline, he may have blocked you.

  • Ask a mutual friend if the person you believe blocked you appears online in his Gmail Chat list. If she does, she has blocked you.
