How to Make a Three Musketeers Hat

Save

Alexandre Dumas' "The Three Musketeers" has enthralled readers since its first publication in 1844. The tale of the young D'Artagnan, along with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, has inspired games, television series and movies. The uniforms worn by the Musketeers have become almost as legendary as the story itself, and children and adults alike continue to don replicas of the 17th century apparel for Halloween and other celebrations. The customary feathered Musketeer hat is an essential accessory that is easy to recreate.

Things You'll Need

  • Black flat-topped hat with round brim
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue or adhesive
  • Black matte ribbon
  • Large black, white or red feather plume
  • Wrap the ribbon around the bottom of the hat's crown, overlapping the end by 1 inch. Cut the ribbon with scissors.

  • Distribute a small thin line of glue along the back of the ribbon. Starting from one side, carefully apply the ribbon to the bottom of the hat's crown, wrapping it around the hat until the ends meet.

Leave the last inch of ribbon unglued--it should be on the opposite side you started from, not the front or the back of the hat.

  • Allow the ribbon to dry.

  • Using the side with the leftover ribbon, pull the brim up until it reaches slightly below the top of the hat's crown. Glue brim to the side of the crown, no more than 1/2 inch from the top. Allow to dry.

  • Place the feather plume between the hat and the 1 inch of leftover ribbon. Once the feather is in place, glue the remaining ribbon to the hat and allow to dry.
