How to Learn Easy Vegetable Carving


Vegetable carving adds a nice elegant look to your table display. Learning simple carving designs makes your vegetables look like a work of art as well as being edible. Carved vegetables make nice centerpieces for parties. It is also a creative way to make vegetables look appealing for children that otherwise don't like to eat their vegetables. Easy vegetable carving is an inexpensive way to dress up your plain old veggie and dip tray for your event.

Things You'll Need

  • Paring knife
  • Apple corer
  • Cut the ends off of a cucumber with a paring knife so you have a stump. Slice small strips around the cucumber's edges down the sides to create the first layer of flower petals. You will have about eight petals. Slice into the cucumber to make an inner layer of petals around the edges. Cut out the core of the cucumber so it looks hollow like a flower center. Trim the edges of your petals so they are pointed instead of squared. Cut a piece of carrot and lay it in the middle of your cucumber flower. It will look like a lotus flower.

  • Slice a carrot in two pieces. You need a 2 inch stump and a longer piece. Cut grooves down the sides of the longer piece with the paring knife. Slice off thin pieces from the grooved carrot piece. They should have jagged edges from the grooves. Cut your other carrot stump so that it tapers from thick to thin from one end to the other. Cut a grid into the top of the thick end. Carve petal shapes around the grid. Place the thin slices you cut into the petal-shaped grooves of the carrot stump. You will have about two layers. This will look like a carnation flower when finished.

  • Stick an apple corer into a red potato. Cut into the potato with a knife until you reach the corer. Cut all the way around the potato to remove the lower half of the potato. You will still have a stem created by the corer when removed. It will now look like a mushroom. Remove small spots of the skin on the top part of the mushroom design to create white spots if desired.

  • Hold a red chili pepper by the stem. Use the paring knife to slice extremely thin strips from end to base. The more strips the better to design this flower design. Place the cut pepper in ice water to make the strips curl open. Remove the seeds and you have a fancy curled flower.

  • Slice a thin piece from the bottom of a tomato so it sits flat without rolling. Cut a wedge section out of the top of the tomato on one side. Scoop out the seeds to hollow it out. Use the carving knife to cut zigzags around the open edges. You now have a little basket design perfect for veggie dip.
