How to Tie Cedar Boughs

Tie together cedar branches to make a cedar bough swag to add to your Christmas holiday decorations. Use natural cedar branches in your home and enjoy their natural beauty and woodsy scent. You can also tie cedar boughs together and decorate them to make swags for hanging from a fireplace or a front door. Add a variety of holiday trimmings such as pine cones, feathers, berries and ribbons for additional decoration.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Work gloves
  • Natural cedar branches
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Garden shears
  • Holiday bow
  • Place newspaper on your work surface to protect the surface from scratches. Place work gloves on to avoid scratching your hands.

  • Separate your cedar branches into piles according to size. You will want at least four to six full branches to make a swag. Make sure your branches have woody stems that are at least 2 inches or more in length.

  • Place the largest cedar branch on the work surface, face-up. Add a layer of branches on top in the next largest size, lining up the branch ends with the branch underneath. Place the branches straight, or turn and skew them slightly, depending on your design preference. Continue to stack layers of branches, with the smallest branches on the top of the pile.

  • Cut a 30-inch piece of floral wire using wire cutters.

  • Place the center of the wire under the woody stems of the branches. Grasp the stems tightly grouped together, and wrap the two ends of wire around the stems. Create a few twists in the wire to secure them.

  • Thread the ends of wire down, around and through the woody stems of the branches. Make sure to weave the wires around each stem, threading around all branches if possible for additional stability. Pull the ends of the wire through the back of the stem area, leaving at least six-inch wire tails coming out. Twist the wires together a few times against the back of the stem. Then twist the wire ends together about three or four times to create a loop for hanging.

  • Cut the ends of the branches evenly, if desired, using garden shears.

  • Add a holiday bow onto the top of the swag to cover the wrapped wire. Add a few drops of hot glue to secure the bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase natural cedar branches at local floral supply stores, garden centers and online floral suppliers.
  • Spray glitter over the entire surface of the cedar bough for a sparkly holiday effect. Alternatively, use spray snow over the surface.
  • Hang your cedar bough swag inside or outdoors at your front entrance.
