How to Call Romania From the United States

Though some of Romania's larger cities are still blighted by Communist-era architecture and fraying infrastructure, the Romanian countryside and villages are second to none. The country has a fairly poor telephone system, though, so don't be surprised if you encounter poor signal quality or get disconnected. That said, it is possible to dial direct to the country.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Determine what time it is in Romania. Romania is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means it is 7 hours later in Romania than it is on the East Coast of the United States, and 10 hours later than it is on the West Coast.
Step2
Remember that most younger Romanians and almost everyone working in the tourist industry speaks some English. If you've stumbled on someone who doesn't, you might try French or German, which are also studied widely.
Step3
Dial 011, the international access code.
Step4
Dial 40, the Romanian country code.
Step5
Drop the 0 from the beginning of the city code. The city code for Bucharest, Romania's capital, is 01.
Step6
Dial the remaining digits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Calling between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. or on weekends will often cost up to 50 percent less than calling during business hours. Call your long-distance carrier to find out which hours are cheapest to call internationally with your long-distance plan.
  • If you're having problems getting through, dial 00 for the international operator and ask him or her to place the call.
  • If you're calling from a pay phone, you'll need to have a calling card or charge the call to a credit card - you won't be able to feed the phone with coins fast enough to keep yourself connected. Follow the instructions printed on the phone for placing the call.

on 11/22/2005 We are actually on the phone with friends in Romania as I write this, and here is how we dialed: 011-40-21-266-xxxx. If at first you don't succeed, try again until you get through. It sometimes takes several attempts for calls to go through (to or from).

on 11/2/2007 Hello,

You must drop the zero and dial 011 (US exit code) + 4 (Romania country code) + the number you were given (without the starting zero). Here's a link www.howtocallabroad.com/romania/
