How to Deal With Failure Scriptures

How to Deal With Failure Scriptures thumbnail
The biblical story of Moses is one of overcoming failure.

In the Bible, some of the greatest leaders, including Moses, David, Peter and Paul, suffered bruising failures. If you have wondered what the Bible says about failure, and how to respond to personal failures in your own life, the message of scripture is that God forgives anyone who sincerely asks for forgiveness and empowers those who believe that anything God wills is possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by reading some of the most renown biblical passages dealing with failure. For example, study the story of Peter's betrayal of Jesus. In John 18:15-26, Peter cravenly denies that he knows Jesus while at the same time Jesus is being questioned by the high priest. Peter is also absent from the crucifixion along with most of the other disciples. After his resurrection, Jesus appears to Peter and tells him, "Feed my sheep."

Read Paul's account of his conversion in Acts 22. Note Paul's acknowledgment of his obsessive persecution of Christians, his participation in the murder of Stephen, and his active attempts to destroy the early Christian movement. Pay attention to his response to the appearance of the risen Christ and to the words of Ananias, who tells Paul to go and be baptized, washing his sins away.

Read about God's promises to Israel after the destruction of Jerusalem. In Isaiah 43:18-19, God speaks to Isaiah about his plan to bring the exiles home from Babylon so they can rebuild the city. The verse urges the people to put the past behind them and look to the future that God is making.

Tips & Warnings

  • People have been studying the Bible for years, so don't be surprised if you don't "get it" at first. By attending Bible study groups and attending church services, and perhaps continuing theological research of your own, you'll benefit from the insights of others.
