Windows Me Is Slow to Dial Up
There are still rural areas where dial-up Internet service is the only type of connection available. Dealing with excessively slow connection speeds can make you want to give up trying to get on the Internet. Check your connection settings to ensure you have the newer 56k V.90 modem and the telephone cables connect correctly, and you may get that slow connection on a Windows ME computer system to speed up a little.

Hardware and Cables

1
Look at the modem card on the back of the computer and try to remember when it was installed. If the modem card is more than 10 years old, replace it with a current 56k V.90 modem card. Older computer modems are slower and make connecting to the Internet tedious.
-
2
Check the cord going to the phone jack. Make sure there are no cuts or breaks in the cord.
-
-
3
Plug the computer directly into the phone jack with a phone cord. Avoid using phone splitters or adding another phone device to this jack as this can cause line noise, which will make it difficult for the computer modem to connect to the Internet.
-
4
Plug a phone into the computer jack and pick up the receiver. Listen for line noise. Dial 1 and listen for "pops" and "crackle" sounds. Call your phone provider and tell the representative you hear noise on the phone line.
-
5
Try to connect at different times of the day. There may be peak hours with a higher amount of traffic, and this will cause a slower connection speed.
Modem Configuration Settings
-
6
Click "Start" and choose "Settings." Click "Control Panel" from the list of options that appears.

7
Double-click the "Dial-Up Networking" icon you see in the Control Panel. Highlight the Dial-up Internet icon you use.
