How to Convert CATV to RCA Output
Cable TV cords (coaxial cables) are usually connected to the television. This allows a viewer to change channels and interact with the programming using their TV remote control. However, it is possible to access cable TV through an RCA connection. In this case, a tuning device (VCR, DVD player or cable box) handles the cable connection. The programming is then sent to the TV from the tuning device through a set of RCA cables. Using this method allows the tuning device to interact with the cable service. It also frees up the "Antenna Input" (coaxial in) on the back of the television.
Instructions
-
-
1
Connect one end of the coaxial cord to the cable outlet. This can usually be found on the lower portion of a wall.
-
2
Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the "Antenna Input" on the back of a tuner device.
-
-
3
Connect the red, yellow and white RCA cables to the color corresponding ports on the back of the tuner device. There will likely be two sets of ports; use the set labeled "Output" or "Composite Output."
-
4
Connect the RCA cables to the color corresponding ports on the back of the television. They should be plugged into the set of ports labeled "Input."
-
5
Turn on your television and tuner device.
-
6
Pick up the remote control and look for a button labeled "A/V," "TV/Video," "Aux" or something similar. Pushing this will switch the television to use RCA inputs. Since the tuning device is plugged in there, the TV will need to be in this mode to watch cable programming.

Tips & Warnings
High-definition DVR systems are usually connected through a high-quality type of cord called HDMI or "Component." Although the setup is similar to what is discussed in this article, this procedure should not be followed for hooking up this type of DVR system.
RCA cables are sometimes referred to as "composite" cables. Televisions and tuning devices sometimes use the word "composite input/output" to refer to this type of connection.
Some tuning devices, such as VCRs and DVD recorders, will allow you to record programming when it is connected to the cable service.
It may be helpful to draw a map or diagram before proceeding with any cord changing operation.
While most VCRs can act as a tuning device, not all DVD players can. This feature is usually reserved for DVD recorders. Check the instruction manual or box before using one of these devices as a tuning device; otherwise, you may not be able to access cable programming through RCA cables.
